Complete Morning Skincare Routine Step by Step for Clear and Glowing Skin: A comprehensive list

If there’s anything I learned in dermatology rotations during medical school, it's the fact that your morning skincare routine doesn’t need to have 25 complicated steps to work.
You don’t need that viral serum on TikTok. You do not need to buy every new “miracle” product that promises glass skin overnight.
However, there is a difference between a truly minimalist skincare routine and a more complete routine.
A minimalist routine can definitely give your skin everything you need: cleansing, hydration, sunscreen, and a few proven active ingredients. And I made just the perfect minimalist routine if you’re into no fuss skincare, or you want to save some money, so check that out here.
However, this article is a more comprehensive routine for those of us who enjoy skincare, want a more polished glow, and like adding products that may not be essential, but can still make a small difference that adds up over time.
Think of it as “all-in, but still reasonable.”
The Main Rule: Do Not Overcomplicate Your Skin
Before we get into the products, here is the most important thing to understand: more products do not automatically mean better skin.
In fact, using too many strong active ingredients can irritate your skin barrier, cause redness, dryness, breakouts, or make your skin more sensitive.
The goal is not to use everything every single day.
The goal is to build a routine with smart categories:
- cleanse
- hydrate
- support the skin barrier
- treat specific concerns
- protect with sunscreen (this last step is the most important!).
That is it.
Step 1: Gentle Cleanse
The morning is the time to keep it gentle and simple, no aggressive cleansing. You simply want to remove overnight oil, sweat, and any residue of skincare from the day before.
For my usual routine, I love the Korean double-cleansing method (cleansing oil and foam cleanser), especially at nigh:
- SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil
- SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule Foam Cleanser
These two pair perfectly together and help remove sunscreen, makeup, and excess oil. I especially like them because it feels gentle and does not leave the skin stripped. Alternatively, the foam cleanser by itself is enough to give your skin that fresh, clean feeling while still being gentle enough for daily use.
Why this step matters:
A clean base helps your skincare layer better and makes makeup sit more smoothly. But the key is to cleanse without damaging your skin barrier.

Step 2: Toner
To be completely honest with you, toners are not 100% essential as is.
The original purpose of toners when they first emerged in the early 20th century was to rebalance the skin after cleansing, especially back when cleansers were more alkaline and stripping. Today, many cleansers are already formulated to be gentle and pH-balanced, so toners are kind of passé.
Unless… you actually like to use toners (guilty) and the toner has some additional ingredients that support hydration, soothing and brightening of the skin.
The key is to choose a toner that actually does something.
My favorites:
- COSRX - AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner:
- This is a nice option if you want something that provides gentle exfoliation to get rid of dead skin cells and excess oil and prepping your skin for the next skin care products.
- TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner:
- This is more of a milky, hydrating toner. It contains ingredients like niacinamide, rice bran extract, ceramide, panthenol, and cica, which makes it a good option if your skin feels dry, dull, or easily irritated.
Why this step matters:
It is not essential, but it can make your skin feel more hydrated, smoother, and calmer. Think of toner as a support step, not the main character.

Step 3: Essence
Essence is another optional step, but this is where Korean skincare really shines.
If your skin feels dehydrated or dull, adding an essence can make your routine feel much more nourishing without making it heavy.
My favorite:
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
This is one of the most famous Korean skincare products for a reason. It is lightweight, hydrating, and gives that plump, healthy-looking glow.
How to use:
The key is to use snail mucin on damp skin, right after toner. This helps it spread better and gives the skin that bouncy, hydrated finish. Then follow with your serums and moisturizer.
Why this step matters:
It helps with hydration and skin comfort. It is not a must-have for everyone, but if your skin loves hydration, this can be a beautiful step.

Step 4: Vitamin C Serum
This is my absolute favorite step (but not the most important one, the most important one is the last step, remember?). Vitamin C is one of the best and honestly most underestimated active ingredients.
My guess is that there are just not enough products with a decent concentration of vitamin C to actually make it work. I’m often seeing concentrations like 4%, 8%... And let me tell you, that is not enough.
Vitamin C helps:
- brighten dull skin
- support collagen
- improve glow over time
- Added protection from the sun and environmental stress
My literal holy grail product (that no one talks about btw, seriously they need a better marketing team), is the Dr. Viton Vitamin C Serum with a whopping 20% of Vitamin C. This has been the only product I have used absolutely consistently for years. I love that it combines vitamin C with supporting ingredients like vitamin E, ferulic acid, jojoba oil, and hyaluronic acid.
That combination makes sense because vitamin C works beautifully in formulas that support stability, hydration, and antioxidant protection.
Another good option:
La Roche-Posay Pure 12% Vitamin C Serum
This is a nice option if you prefer pharmacy-graded skincare and want something more widely available. La Roche-Posay usually formulates with sensitive skin in mind so they have a lower percentage of vitamin C, which makes this a good alternative for people who find stronger vitamin C products irritating.
Important note:
Higher percentage does not always mean better. A strong vitamin C serum can be amazing if your skin tolerates it, but if it stings, burns, or makes you red, it may not be the right formula for you.
Why this step matters:
Vitamin C is a great glow-supporting active ingredient. It is especially useful if your skin looks dull, tired, or uneven.

Step 5: Ceramide Serum
This step is especially good if your skin is dry, sensitive, irritated, or barrier-compromised.
Ceramides are lipids naturally found in the skin barrier. When your barrier is healthy, your skin feels smoother, calmer, and less reactive. When your barrier is damaged, your skin may feel tight, dry, red, or irritated.
Keep in mind though, if you have oily skin, some rich ceramide creams may feel too heavy or greasy, but lightweight ceramide serums would be a better option.
My Geisha Real Ceramide Serum 2%
This is a beautiful option for barrier support, especially if your skin leans dry or dehydrated. It contains 2,0% Ceramide NP, plus hydrating and soothing ingredients.
Another good option:
Anua - 7 Rice Ceramide Hydrating Barrier
This serum combines rice extract, ceramides, niacinamide, panthenol, and hydrating ingredients to support the skin barrier and add a healthy glow. This step is great if your skin is dry, sensitive, or easily irritated, because a strong barrier helps the rest of your routine work better.
Why this step matters:
This is not a flashy active ingredient step. A ceramide serum is more about helping your skin stay calm, comfortable, hydrated, and resilient over time.

Step 6: Hydrating or Repair Serum
After your barrier-supporting serum, this step is where you can add extra hydration, soothing, or repair support depending on what your skin needs.
This step is not a must, but if your skin tends to get dry, red, dehydrated or dull, it can make the routine feel more complete.
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule
This is a simple, calming serum centered around centella asiatica based on a formula that helps hydrate the skin without feeling heavy. I like this type of product because it is not trying to do too much. It is soothing, lightweight, and easy to layer.
VT Cosmetics PDRN Serum
PDRN is one of those trendy skincare ingredients that is getting a lot of attention right now. I would not call it an essential active like SPF, retinoids, or vitamin C, but I do think it can be a nice addition if your skin looks tired, dull, or in need of extra bounce.
I personally love to use this specific serum from VT cosmetics (went through countless bottles) because I’m in love with the texture, it’s so silky, milky.. I don’t know how to describe it, but I LOVE. Leaves my skin so dewy.
Why this step matters:
Hydrating and calming serums help keep the skin looking fresh, especially if you use stronger actives like vitamin C, exfoliants, or retinoids elsewhere in your routine.

Step 7: Eye Cream
Eye cream is totally optional.
I know that is not the most glamorous answer, but it is true. If your moisturizer does not irritate your eyes, you may not need a separate eye cream.
But if you enjoy eye creams or want something lighter and more targeted, they can be a lovely step.
La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C Eye Cream
This is a nice option if your main concerns are dullness, fine lines, or a tired-looking undereye area, since it helps the skin look smoother, brighter and more refreshed.
La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Eye Serum
This is better if your main concern is dehydration, fine lines from dryness, or wanting the under-eye area to look plumper and fresher.
How to use it:
Use a tiny amount and tap gently around the orbital bone. Do not apply too close to the lash line, because the product can move and irritate your eyes.
Why this step matters:
It is not essential, but it can make the under-eye area look more hydrated and polished.

Step 8: Moisturizer
Don’t skip this step. Even if you have oily skin, you still need moisturizer.
The point of moisturizer is actually not just to “add moisture”. A moisturizer also helps seal in the already existing hydration in your skin and prevent it from escaping, and thus helps support the skin barrier.
Depending on the formula, it can also soften the skin, calm irritation, and make your skin feel more comfortable. Considering all of this, it is important to choose your moisturizer based on your skin type.
For oily or combination skin
If you have oily or combination skin, the best moisturizer for you would be in the form of lightweight gel cream or water creams that hydrate without feeling heavy.
My favorite options:
- Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream fits perfectly for acne-prone/sensitive/oily-combo skin because it’s formulated as a lightweight, non-comedogenic gel cream with niacinamide, panthenol, and ceramide NP.
- Purito SEOUL Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream a fragrance-free gel-type that has a dewy but lightweight formula, it’s great for oily/combination skin.
For dry or sensitive skin
If your skin feels dry, tight, sensitive, or easily irritated, look for richer barrier creams with ceramides, panthenol, madecassoside, shea butter, or richer emollients.
Great options:
- Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream
- SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Probio-Cica Enrich Cream
For normal skin
If your skin is normal and fairly balanced, you don’t have much to worry about. You can choose a moisturizer based on the finish you prefer.
- For a soft, dewy glow, Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream is a great option.
- If you want something more lightweight and glow-boosting, COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream is another popular choice, especially if your skin sometimes feels dehydrated or a little dull.
Why this step matters:
Moisturizer keeps your skin barrier healthy and happy. And a healthy skin barrier is what makes your skin look smooth, calm, and naturally glowing.

Step 9: Sunscreen
This is literally the most important step in the entire routine.
Believe me when I say: if you do nothing else besides one thing, then wear sunscreen.
Daily SPF (reapplied every 2 hours!) helps protect against premature aging, pigmentation, collagen breakdown, sun damage, uneven skin tone… and most importantly, skin cancer.
My favorite sunscreen options are actually the ones that don’t feel like sunscreen at all, but instead it feels like you’re wearing a kind of serum. Now that’s a perfect sunscreen in my book. Here are some of my favorites:
How to use it:
Use a generous amount every morning as the last step of your skincare routine. If you are outside, sweating, or exposed to direct sunlight (even through glass windows), reapply every 2 hours during the day.
Here are some of my favorites:
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAir SPF 50 Serum Sunscreen
The best one out there is La Roche Posay, of course. They are the most beloved skincare brand among doctors for a reason. They recently launched their LRP UVAIR serum sunscreen which is so lightweight you won’t even feel it.
It contains hyaluronic acid that boosts hydration, and niacinamide, which evens the skin tone. It also has antioxidants that provide additional protection from pollution and free radicals.
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+
Another fave, the Madagascar Cenella Hyalu-cica Water-Fit Sun Serum feels literally like it sounds. You just wouldn’t tell it apart from a regular serum, it’s so light and watery. It provides hydration and soothes irritated skin.
This is a beautiful Korean sunscreen option if you like a lightweight, serum-like finish. It sits nicely under makeup and does not feel heavy.
Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics
One of the most iconic K-beauty sunscreens, the Beauty of Joseon is known for its lightweight texture, hydrating properties from rice extracts and skin brightening and evening from niacinamide.
Why this step matters:
I can’t stress this enough, but SPF is honestly THE most important thing you can do for your skin. Daily sunscreen helps prevent premature aging, pigmentation, collagen loss, sun damage and skin cancer.
If you do everything but you don’t put SPF regularly, it’s like you’re doing nothing at all. Conversely, if you do only SPF and nothing else from this list, you would have pretty good results, I promise.
